Reviews

Science Books & Films - Kathleen Conn, King Spry Law Firm, Bethlehem, PA

"Take 5! for Science will prove to be a valuable tool for teachers and home-schooling parents who want to motivate and engage their students in learning and writing about science topics. The science throughout is sound, and all disciplines of science are represented. In addition, the content is keyed to Next Generation Science Standards and to the Common Core State Standards in Language Arts. Each section gives basic information for the teacher or parent before delving into the prompts for students." - Science Books & Films

Middle Web - Laura Von Staden

"Take 5! is a handy science resource targeted for elementary teachers, including grades 4 and 5. The book provides enough prompts to use throughout the entire school year with the goal of helping students to tie science, writing and critical thinking together early in their careers. . . .Each topic addressed in the book has a section for the teacher that includes information to help them refresh their knowledge of the topic with interesting (and sometimes little known) data, common misconceptions and links to topics in other content areas and the real world. . . .The prompts could also easily be used for transitions, for introductions to the topics, or as “Do Now”/Bell work because they are designed to take 5 to 10 minutes. Very useful resource." - Middle Web

School Library Connection - Terri Lent, NBCT School Librarian, Patrick Henry High School, Ashland, VA

"This teacher resource provides 150 writing prompts to build critical thinking and writing on earth, physical, and life science topics. This well-organized book includes ideas for setting up science notebooks, along with accompanying student and teacher rubrics. . . .I found this book to be a wonderful resource that would provide everything needed to easily teach a science concept and integrate writing and critical thinking into the lesson in a way that would be exciting to elementary students." - School Library Connection

Teacher Librarian, "Resources for Teacher Librarians" - Elizabeth "Betty" Marcoux

"The correlations between these prompts and the Common Core and the NGSS (Next Generation Science Standards) are well done – each prompt is set up such that there is instant connection to a goal/learning outcome. Fun way to increase changes for students to think and write." - Teacher Librarian, "Resources for Teacher Librarians"

They have included a sample rubric and suggestions for assessments. Each science topic includes two prompts, a science teacher background page, and alignment with Next Generation Science Standards, Common Core, suggested activities based on science and engineering practices, materials needed, and assessment ideas." - NSTA Recommends
