Leap!

Leap!  is an information text program created to provide the instructional support emergent and early readers need as they learn to navigate complex text.  The program was designed to provide scaffolded text that introduce nonfiction text features through thematically linked and engaging books.

Program Structure

There are 3 sets of books that make up the Leap!  program:

  • The books in each set get increasingly more difficult (text load and concepts)
  • Each set is made up of 4 themes
  • Each theme has 1 Big Book and 3 instructional texts (1 of the 3 books is a small version of the big book)
  • The books in each theme share concepts and content that provide multiple access points to the same instruction

Leap!  provides instruction that supports literacy development by introducing students to the following:

  • Initial letter cues, word structures, and sentence patterns
  • Photograph relationships — understanding labels and captions
  • Direction arrows, headings, and sidebars
  • Purpose of a contents page and a glossary
  • Understanding information within a simple graph or chart
  • How to read maps, bulleted points, and fact boxes
  • Text include introduction to reading dates and using diagrams
  • Students learn the purpose of an index and icons within the text

Leap!  provides teachers with an instructional plan that fully supports student’s acquisition of the skills needed to navigate complex informational text, providing a basis to further literacy development. This is done through modeling with the Big Books and then providing additional practice through the instructional texts.
