Kindergarten teachers know that a child's first taste of school should be engaging, active, social, and fun! Yet teachers are presented with a challenge. How do they nurture the holistic, exploratory nature of early childhood while teaching with the intentionality and rigor required to meet learning goals? Let this resource pave the way. English Language Arts the Kindergarten Way contains methods for teaching foundational reading skills, building vocabulary, inspiring and developing writing, and helping children respond to literature and informational text—while inherently fulfilling the needs of the whole child. An entire year of activities is included. And all activities are classroom-tested and naturally infuse visual art, music, drama, poetry, movement and puppetry—so that kindergartners meet learning goals their way.
"This thoughtful, purposeful book is written by two phenomenal kindergarten teachers who saw the need to focus on what children know and are curious about. This provided the catalyst for them to build a program that moves young children ahead in their growth as speakers, readers, and writers. They do not focus on developing specific skills, such as letter recognition or auditory discrimination, in isolation of content. They are early childhood teachers who believe we should be facilitators of children’s existing literacy knowledge, supporting and extending it to greater levels of complexity. Thanks to this book, the guesswork is gone; the magic begins." - Mary Ann Ranells, PhD, West Ada School District, Meridian, ID

"Keep this easy to read book close at hand! It addresses the very core foundational skills children need to learn in kindergarten to be successful. The activities in this book are easy and convenient for teachers. They are also engaging and are designed for students to think through their work. Through these activities, Cochell and Fullmer provide students with opportunity to show ownership, either through presentation to classmates or by a simple explanation to the teacher. There are so many things I love about this book, from addressing core standards to a "Why we love it" section at the end of each activity. This particular section briefly highlights what students will take away from the activity. English Language Arts The Kindergarten Way is a useful reference teachers can sift through in a day and easily incorporate into their lessons!" - Kari Dameron, Kindergarten teacher at Valley View Elementary (Bonners Ferry, ID)

"As I read page by page through The Kindergarten Way, I sat smiling with memories of my own kindergarten teaching experience, and what I know to be true about these young learners. Laura and Molly have captured their needs through delightfully creative and enriching activities to bring about early literacy. The ideas and strategies in this book focus on what inspires kindergarteners, building on the existing language and literary experience and knowledge, and taking their minds to deeper and more widely complex learning. I'm especially pleased to see art brought into literacy, because I know how well it works to inspire learning. My favorite part of the book is within each activity, where there is the "Why WE Love It" introductory paragraph. The authors clearly explain why the activity works and what it's all about in the grander scheme of literacy. There's more than enough for a year of growing and learning in The Kindergarten Way. I highly recommend it." - MaryAnn F. Kohl, author of more than 20 art books for teachers and children

Laura Fullmer developed a love of teaching while working in early elementary reading programs at the University of Florida. Her article, Teaching Sam to Enjoy Reading, was based on these experiences and published in NAEYC’s Young Children magazine. She received a Master's Degree in Elementary Education in 2004 and has been a kindergarten and first grade teacher since. She holds a national reading specialist endorsement, served as a reading intervention teacher and RtI lead, and works closely with teachers new to the profession. The Idaho State Department of Education recognized her with two 21st Century Classroom Awards for best practices in Visual Arts and Technology Innovation. When she's not teaching or designing lessons, she and her husband Jeff are savoring time with their own "not-so-young" children.
