Grace and the Guiltless

Grace Milton's peaceful life with her family on a horse ranch outside Tombstone, Arizona is shattered in one devastating night. Her parents and siblings are all brutally killed by the notorious Guiltless Gang, leaving Grace the only survivor. Alone and desperate, she buries her family and sets out into the wilderness on her trusted stallion, Bullet, with burning thoughts of revenge. But when she falls ill on the trek, a young man called Joe saves her life by taking her to an Apache camp to heal her body and spirit. She begins to learn their ways, and despite all her heartache, she finds herself beginning to fall for Joe. But vengeance is never far from her mind, and the effort to find peace and forgiveness is a constant struggle--especially when she encounters one of the Guiltless Gang, Doc Slaughter, by chance. Will she fall into the darkness, or can Grace channel her newfound skills into a means of survival as a bounty hunter?

The Historical Novels Review, Historical Novel Society - Bryan Dumas

"This is a well-written book with a near frenetic pace that only slows briefly. . . .Erin Johnson’s debut novel evolves Grace from a foolhardy innocent into a gritty, driven woman. . . .a nice start to what will become a series called Wanted." - The Historical Novels Review, Historical Novel Society

VOYA - Stacey Hayman

"It is a refreshing surprise to discover a young girl at the heart of an old-fashioned western but still find classic elements like: a trusty steed devoted to his rider; a band of outlaws led by a greedy businessman and a mysterious lady; a corrupt sheriff but honest young deputy; and a double-dealing proprietress who runs both the boarding house and the bordello. . . .A budding romance, clues to a possible conspiracy, and a cliffhanger ending promise exciting adventures ahead." - VOYA

Kirkus Reviews

"Lots of action, blood and death argue eloquently against those telling Grace to forgive and move on. Only the sequel will reveal her choice." - Kirkus Reviews

"...definitely an entertaining read that fans outside of the Western genre can enjoy as well. And most importantly, it leaves you wanting more. You have to know what happens next or else! Grace is a teenaged girl who kicks butt gradually. . . .ultimately it is Grace’s iron-nailed determination to survive and stand up for her family that motivates her to learn all the skills necessary to survive in the wild in order to face the Guiltless Gang." -

Booklist - Summer Hayes

"Johnson adheres to the well-established conventions of the western genre but provides a modern twist through Grace’s contemporary demeanor. . . .the cinematic quality and rapid pacing should keep readers engaged. The cliff-hanger ending and a plethora of unanswered questions guarantee an exciting sequel." - Booklist

Publishers Weekly

"Johnson debuts with an atmospheric Western, first in the Wanted series, starring vigilante Grace Milton. . . .Johnson delivers cinematic action and striking descriptions of the landscape typical of the genre, and a dusting of romance enriches Grace's life without becoming the main impetus driving her or the story. By the end, Grace's quest has just begun, and readers should be taken with how she has evolved into a gutsy, cutthroat heroine." - Publishers Weekly

School Library Journal - Laura Falli, McNeil High School, Austin, TX

"Johnson remains faithful to standard Western lore in this historical fiction novel: a young person seeks revenge on outlaws. . . .A revenge epic in the vein of True Grit." - School Library Journal

June 1, 2014 Book Report - Cheyenne C., Teen Board Member

"Packed with action, drama, and, yes, a little romance, this book is sure to draw in readers from the first sentence and hold them there until the last. Johnson does a great job of creating interesting characters and setting up thrilling situations that will have the audience on the edge of their seats. . . .Fans will be begging for the next book in the series once they finish GRACE AND THE GUILTLESS; it ends on a perfect cliff-hanger." - Book Report
