Science Books & Films - Peter I-Kung Wu, Stanford University School of Medicine, Standford, CA

"Fruits is a short, easy-to-read book from the Healthy Eating With MyPlate Series that introduces to young readers what fruits are, what they look like, and how eating them promotes health. The book also suggests how to incorporate fruits into a well-balanced diet. A simple picture glossary and quiz with answers are also included. A website on healthy eating, whose content may be above the reading level of early readers, is promoted. Notes at the end for parents and teachers suggest explanations to share with young listeners plus interactive learning activities to help children learn about fruits. Discussion in early sections of the book may jump to topics in another section without a clear transition. Some statements can be reordered to improve logical flow; some pictures can be matched to a different statement to more appropriately illustrate the idea; and some statements can be reworded to improve coherence of the discussion. More consistent labeling of fruits shown in pictures plus having a picture table of various fruits in the glossary would enhance the educational content in the book. Pictures of fruits are colorful and sharp. Pictures showing children of diverse backgrounds enjoying eating various fruits, participating in different activities, and acting in assorted settings not only portray and promote a healthy message, but are also engaging to young readers. This is a very readable book with a positive message enhanced by beautiful pictures for young children to learn about fruits and healthy eating." - Science Books & Films
