Booklist - Angela Leeper

"Not only one of hip-hop’s greatest artists, Jay-Z has become one of the music industry’s most influential entrepreneurs, and thus he is a fitting inclusion in the Titans of Business series. Starting with Jay-Z’s early life as Shawn Corey Carter in a poor Brooklyn neighborhood, the biography recounts how he overcame his difficult adolescence as a drug dealer with his desire to be a musician. The straightforward text recognizes that Jay-Z’s success can be attributed as much to his business skills as his singing talent. When his first record company failed to widely distribute his first single, Jay-Z founded his own record company, Roc-AFella. Since then, the book describes, he has also worked as CEO of Def Jam Records and created a business empire that includes designing his own clothing line and producing films. The author also notes Jay-Z’s critics, who contend he is more interested in his brand than his music. Numerous color photos, quotes by Jay-Z, and entrepreneurial tips throughout ensure the musician’s continued popularity among young readers. –Angela Leeper Booklist 11/1/2012" - Booklist

School Library Journal "Series Made Simple" - Christina Dorr

"This series is written in a lively fashion, beginning with the table-of-contents pages that contain text boxes with blurbs about what readers can expect to learn in the subsequent sections ("Find out what you need to do to have a successful career like Jay-Z."). Captioned photos, sidebars, and off-set quotes make for an interesting layout. The various fonts and black-and-white borders are reminiscent of a computer screen, adding to the idea that the individuals are cutting edge in their fields. The volumes span the subjects’ entire lives, but hone in on their careers. Controversies are noted, but downplayed. For example, Zuckerberg’s legal issues are given little space, and Jay-Z’s hustling past is rationalized ("At first, the only way Shawn could see to make money for himself and his family was to become a hustler…") and accompanied by a photo of a crack addict using drugs. Each title concludes with a "How to Become an Entrepreneur" chapter, recapping how the subjects achieved their wealth. -- Christina Dorr, Hilliard City School District, OH School Library Journal, "Series Made Simple" 11/1/2012" - School Library Journal "Series Made Simple"
