Science Books and Films - Kristin Hudlow

"Minerals is one of four books from the "Let’s Rock" series. This book, written for elementary students, provides a good overview of the rock cycle and mineral formation. It discusses where minerals are formed including volcanoes, water, and outer space. As part of the explanation of the rock cycle, metamorphism is described in greater detail. The section on identification of minerals includes the properties of color, shininess or luster, hardness, and smell. While breakage patterns are described, the terms fracture and cleavage are not used. Uses of minerals identified in the book include nutrition and industrial applications. Mining processes, location, and rarity are discussed as a means of assigning a monetary value to minerals. The book points out that certain minerals are found in limited amounts and therefore recycling is important. Where to collect minerals, tools to use, safety precautions, and permission from land owners is provided. The hands-on activity is about making mineral paints. No safety precautions are provided, such as wearing goggles when grinding minerals, and the use of gum arabic. A glossary and index are provided. The "Find out more" section includes book recommendations, websites, and places to visit. The pictures are clear, and the minerals easily seen. It is not often I see a book with a picture of granite where you can clearly see and identify all three minerals. I highly recommend this book!" - Science Books and Films
