NSTA Recommends - Tracy Alley

"This series is a wonderful collection for a classroom, school, or public library. The books focus on individual animals of the African grassland—hyenas, ostriches, baboons, coyotes, kori bustards, and wildebeest. The author uses simple informative text for preschoolers through second graders while focusing readers on key words in bold for further discussion and research. The amazing photographs will transport children to Africa to learn about some of the most unusual creatures in the animal kingdom. The author uses lots of nonfiction tools to guide readers. For instance, a wonderfully structured "table of contents" uses great questions for students to ponder. The glossary has small pictures to go along with the definitions. The book includes a color-coded map of the world showing where each animal lives, a body map of each animal with clear labels, important words in bold throughout the text, a list of websites and books for further readings, and an index. The paperback format of these books makes them practical for classroom use either to support reading or for group reports. Because of its high interest and the incorporation of so many elements to support informational reading, this is a great series to add to your library for young readers who are passionate about animals. http://www.nsta.org/recommends/ViewProduct.aspx?ProductID=20657" - NSTA Recommends
