Irreverent cartoon illustrations bring key social studies concepts to life in this delightful series. Fun text and humorous artwork make learning a breeze, whether it's about American institutions or crucial concepts in American life. Just in time for the 2008 presidential election!
"This title in the “Cartoon Nation” series points out that all residents of the U.S. come from immigrants. The first people came from Asia between 15,000 and 40,000 years ago. The Vikings settled in Newfoundland around A.D. 1000, but abandoned the settlements due to the climate. The author discusses European exploration and early settlement. Next, he highlights Ellis Island, the people who arrived there, and the challenges faced by untrained immigrants. The last sections deal with modern immigration. The author talks about the green card process and the lottery to reasons for immigrating to the U.S. O’Donnell also explores undocumented immigration and the process for becoming a citizen. Last, we learn about the benefits of immigration and the future of the process. Each page has several cartoon figures, which reinforce the facts presented. At times irreverent, the humor will appeal to children. The facts are also reinforced by a good timeline. There is a lot of important information in this book. The FactHound website, maintained by the publisher, has links to the Ellis Island Immigration Museum website, a Jamestown and the Powhatan website, and the Library of Congress website. The glossary, a bibliography, and an index are useful." - Children's Literature Comprehensive Database
